Why I started

I came out of corporate roofing.

Travis Haessly, founder of The Roof Champion of Columbus.

Travis Haessly, founder

I spent eight years inside the big corporate roofing world, so I know what those companies aren’t telling you.

The overhead in there is hard to believe, and it has to come from somewhere. It comes from you. Then private equity started buying these companies up. Homeowners stopped being people with a problem on their house and became a number on somebody’s spreadsheet.

I left because there’s a better way to do this.

When you call The Roof Champion, you get me. No call center. No closer sent out behind me. No four hour presentation built to wear you down until you sign something. I look at your roof, I show you what’s on it, and I give you a straight price from a local company.

If your roof is fine, I’ll tell you it’s fine. That’s the part they could never let me say.

What I learned in there

Filing a claim was the goal. It shouldn’t be.

What got counted in there was claims filed. Not roofs fixed.

They wanted me performing that way. I couldn’t do it. I told more people there was nothing wrong with their roof than I told there was a problem, and those weren’t the numbers they were looking for. It didn’t go over well.

A claim isn’t free to you, even when it gets paid. It touches your insurance score, on a house that’s probably the most expensive thing you own. That’s worth spending when the roof needs it. It isn’t worth spending because somebody had a number to hit.

The other half of it is repair. Not the idea of repair, the actual work. Knowing what’s on the roof and what it’s called. Getting a shingle off without wrecking the four around it. Finding material that matches something they stopped making years ago. That’s a skill, and it’s the one that doesn’t get taught. If a whole roof is the only thing you know how to do, a whole roof is the only answer you have.

I learned the repair side. So when I tell you a roof has five good years left, I can also fix the part that doesn’t.

I’m not trying to build another one of those. I’m trying to get back to human beings serving other human beings.

Why it is free

People want to know what the catch is.

There isn’t one, but there is a reason.

If I get on your roof and tell you it has five good years left, you didn’t spend anything and I didn’t sell anything. And when it comes about that time in five years and you’re thinking about it, you’re probably going to call me.

That’s the whole plan. It only works if I tell you the truth.

The price rule

Your price doesn’t move.

If we find something under the shingles that changes it, you get the photo before you get the number, and the work stops until you say go.
