Do you use synthetic underlayment or felt?
FAQ: Do You Use Synthetic Underlayment or Felt for Shingle Roofing?
Short answer:
We use synthetic underlayment. Every time.
Here’s why it matters for your roof:
Traditional felt (also called tar paper) used to be the industry standard. But today, it just doesn’t hold up compared to high-performance synthetic materials. At The Roof Champion of Columbus, we’ve made the switch permanently—for good reason.
What Synthetic Underlayment Does Better:
Stronger and more durable.
Synthetic underlayment doesn’t tear easily when walked on or during installation. It holds tight even under tough weather conditions.Better water resistance.
It repels water instead of absorbing it like felt. That means better protection for your roof deck before the shingles go on—and long after. No wrinkles or buckling.
Unlike felt, synthetic doesn’t bubble or crumple in the heat. That helps your shingles lay flatter and last longer.Safer for our crews.
It’s engineered with slip-resistant surfaces, which helps us stay safe while protecting your home.Longer-lasting performance.
Felt breaks down quickly when exposed to sun and moisture. Synthetic lasts longer and stays intact under the shingles for years.
Why Homeowners Choose Us:
We’ve replaced hundreds of shingle roofs across Powell, Dublin, Worthington, Hilliard, and all over Columbus. Every one of them gets the same upgraded material—no shortcuts, no upsell.
It’s one of those upgrades that just makes sense. We don’t charge extra for doing it right. It’s just how we build roofs.

FAQs
How long does synthetic underlayment last?
Most high-quality synthetic underlayments are designed to last 20-30 years under shingles—far outpacing felt. We only install products we trust to perform over time.
Is synthetic underlayment included in your quote, or is it an upgrade?
It’s always included. We don’t believe in bait-and-switch pricing. What we quote is what you get—no hidden upgrades or surprises.
Can I request felt underlayment if I want to?
Technically yes, but we strongly discourage it. Synthetic is far superior in performance, safety, and durability. We’re not in the business of doing work we wouldn’t recommend for our own homes.
Your Roof Deserves the Right Foundation
Choosing the right underlayment is a critical part of protecting your investment. If a roofer’s still offering felt in 2025, ask why.
When we say we fight for our customers, we mean it—starting with the materials we use.
