FAQ: Are There Different Grades of Cedar Shakes?

Yes. Cedar shakes come in three main grades:

  • Premium – 100% edge grain, heartwood only. No flat grain or sapwood. Maximum durability and longevity.

  • Number 1 – Mostly edge grain with some flat grain. Less durable than Premium.

  • Number 2 – A mix of flat and edge grain, includes sapwood. Shortest lifespan.

At The Roof Champion of Columbus, we only install Premium grade cedar shakes. Here's why:

  • They last significantly longer.

  • They lay flatter and perform better in high winds and heavy rain.

  • They’re less prone to curling, cupping, and splitting over time.

  • They’re the only grade trusted by the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau for long-term performance when properly installed and maintained.

You only want to do this once. Let’s make sure it lasts.

Why we recommend Premium shakes, always:

  • Made from heartwood – the most decay-resistant part of the tree.

  • Edge grain only – more stable and less likely to warp.

  • Backed by supplier certifications – like CSSB Certi-Label™ products.

Lower grades might be cheaper upfront, but they cost you more down the road in repairs and early replacements.

FAQs

How long does a Premium cedar shake roof last?
With proper ventilation and maintenance, a Premium cedar shake roof can last 30–50 years in Central Ohio conditions.

Are all cedar shakes naturally the same?
No. Quality varies by tree species, where it’s harvested, and how it's cut. We source our cedar from certified mills that meet the highest industry standards.

Can I install a lower grade shake to save money?
You could—but it won’t last. You'll likely face more maintenance, early failure, and a shorter roof life. It's not worth the trade-off if you plan to live in your home long-term.

How can I tell if I’m getting Premium grade?
Ask your roofer to show you the product label. Look for:

  • Certi-Label™ Premium (from CSSB)

  • Edge grain only

  • No flat grain or sapwood

At The Roof Champion, we show you every material before we install it. No guesswork. No shortcuts.
