Yes. Cedar shakes come in three main grades:

• Premium – 100% edge grain, heartwood only. No flat grain or sapwood. Maximum durability and longevity.

• Number 1 – Mostly edge grain with some flat grain. Less durable than Premium.

• Number 2 – A mix of flat and edge grain, includes sapwood. Shortest lifespan.

With proper ventilation and maintenance, a Premium cedar shake roof can last 30–50 years in Central Ohio conditions.

Are all cedar shakes naturally the same?
No. Quality varies by tree species, where it’s harvested, and how it's cut. We source our cedar from certified mills that meet the highest industry standards.

Can I install a lower grade shake to save money?
You could—but it won’t last. You'll likely face more maintenance, early failure, and a shorter roof life. It's not worth the trade-off if you plan to live in your home long-term.

How can I tell if I’m getting Premium grade?
